The higher education programmes are grouped in a three cycle degree structure: Bachelor - Master - Ph.D

Bachelor's programmes (Professional orientation)

These programmes are in the first place geared towards the professional practice and aim at bringing the students to a level of general and specific knowledge and of competences necessary for the independent exercise of a profession. The programme is therefore practice-oriented and includes periods of apprenticeships.
Professional bachelor's programmes are only offered by the university colleges.
These bachelor's programmes consist of at least 180 ECTS credits and take on average three academic years.

Bachelor's programmes (Academic orientation)

These programmes are in the first place geared towards theoretic knowledge and further studies at a master's level.
These bachelor's programmes consist of at least 180 ECTS credits and take on average three academic years.

Advanced bachelor's programmes

Advanced bachelor's programmes are actually further studies and aim at deepening the knowledge and/or competences acquired in a professional bachelor's programme.
A student must therefore already hold a bachelor's degree to enrol. These programmes consist of at least 60 ECTS credits and take on average one academic year.

Master's degrees


Master's programmes

Master's programmes consist of at least 60 ECTS credits and take on average one academic year. Depending on the field of study programmes last longer.
Master's programmes have an academic orientation but can in addition include a more professional orientation. These programmes aim at bringing the student to an advanced level of knowledge and competences in a specific field of study.
Master's programmes are concluded with a master's dissertation. This takes a minimum of 15 ECTS credits and a maximum of 30 ECTS credits.

Advanced master's programmes

Advanced master's programmes are actually further studies and aim at deepening the knowledge and/or competences in a certain field of study.
A student must already hold a master's degree to enrol. These programmes consist of at least 60 ECTS credits and take on average one academic year.

PhD degree


Doctoral programmes

The degree of ' doctor ' is awarded by a university jury after a public presentation of a doctoral thesis which confirms the capability of the creation of new scientific knowledge based upon independent scientific research. The doctoral thesis should have the potential to lead to publications in scientific journals.

Old degrees

The holders of the academic degrees (awarded by the universities, the recognised faculties for Protestant Theology Studies and the examination board of the Flemish community) have been entitled to use the title of master:  licentiaat, handelsingenieur, burgerlijk ingenieur, burgerlijk ingenieur-architect, bio-ingenieur, landbouwkundig ingenieur, ingenieur voor de scheikunde en de landbouwindustrieën, apotheker, arts, tandarts, dierenarts, van gediplomeerde in de aanvullende studiën, van gediplomeerde in de gespecialiseerde studiën, doctor in de rechten (granted at last in academic year 1972-1973), doctor in de diergeneeskunde zonder proefschrift of doctor in de genees-, heel-, en verloskunde zonder proefschrift.

The holders of the degrees (awarded by the university colleges/hogescholen and the examination board of the Flemish community) have been entitled to use the title of master: industrieel ingenieur, architect, interieurarchitect, meester, licentiaat of handelsingenieur.

The holders of the degrees (awarded by the university colleges/hogescholen and the examination board of the Flemish community) have been entitled to use the title of bachelor: gegradueerde, maatschappelijke assistent, vroedvrouw, kleuterleid(st)er, kleuteronderwijzer(es), onderwijzer(es), assistent in de psychologie, maatschappelijk adviseur, architect-assistent, technisch ingenieur, van geaggregeerde voor het secundair onderwijs groep 1 of van geaggregeerde voor het lager secundair onderwijs.
